The Data Book in English
The Data Books are three collections of data handling and probability lessons for Key Stage 2 and 3. They have been commissioned by the Welsh Assembly (formerly ACCAC) and have been written simultaneously in Welsh and in English. With a Welsh flavour to the examples, these materials would nonetheless be equally suitable for schools in Wales and in England.
Each book is published in an innovative A2 format which contains posters that stimulate discussion accompanied by a page of teacher prompts that give guidance on questions to ask, key words and lesson aims. The book is supplied on a table top easel with the pages spiral bound at the top so teachers can see their notes on one side, while students see the poster on the front.
The A2 book is accompanied by an A4 book containing a complete set of photocopiable pupil worksheets linked to each pupil poster, OHP slide originals, desktop copies of the teacher pages and comprehensive teacher's notes. Also included is a CD-ROM containing the posters as a menu driven presentation perfect for use on an interactive whiteboard, together with useful web links and data collected by the Census at School project in a user friendly format. (The CD also contains PDF files for all of support materials).
There are three books in the series. Each contains 20 activities which cover areas selected from the National Curriculum in Wales and the National Numeracy Strategy in England.

Data Book 2 continues the themes developed in Data Book 1, aiming its twenty activities at both Key Stage 2 and 3. It could be used entirely within the primary or secondary school or could be a valuable addition to existing bridging materials between years 6 and 7.
The three averages and the idea of range are introduced in real contexts and pupils are encouraged to start testing their own ideas and predictions using real data collected by themselves. Cross curricular themes are explored with Science, Geography, PE and Health Education.

Again the emphasis is placed on using real data that is relevant to pupils' experiences and the disc includes more data from the Census at School project as well as extensive results from a school sports day database. By the end of the book pupils are expected to make and test hypotheses and the final activities are an ideal preparation for Key Stage 4.
